Who Will Stop the Madness?
I am still amazed by the lack of leadership in our hallowed halls of Congress, on the topic of intelligent gun control in the United States.
Our forefathers did not intend for the Constitution and Bill of Rights to give every citizen the right to bear arms with an automatic or semi-automatic weapon.
The second amendment to the Constitution actually states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The intent was to have a weapon available to fight against the British or any other nation, who waged war on the United States. It was also intended for home and personal protection and made no mention of restricting hunting or confiscation of said weapons by any future government restriction.
Just like the antiquated flintlock in the photo, our "right to bear arms" in the 21st Century is antiquated also. We need Congressional members to stop worrying about getting re-elected and to amend the Constitution to make automatic and semi-automatic weapons with large magazine clips illegal to be sold to the public.
Standard hunting and home protection weapons, as well as, the right to carry a legal licensed concealed weapon are the backbone of this nation, but military style assault weapons have no place in public use.
And if we actually do find some members of Congress with a backbone to stop the madness, then I hope they will also tackle the problem of finding adequate funding for mental health programs, which would help those with mental illness and keep weapons out of their hands.
